A toll sticker is only valid once it has been properly affixed to the vehicle, which must be done prior to using the toll road network.
Please note that the mere purchase or possession of a toll sticker does NOT satisfy all the requirements for proper payment of the toll.
After removing the foil backing, the toll sticker must be placed without damage directly onto the inside of the windscreen in a location which is clearly visible from outside the vehicle, where it can be inspected (e.g. it may not be placed behind a tinted section of the windscreen). The instructions for affixing which are found on the backside of the sticker are recommendations (place the sticker on the left-hand side of the windscreen or behind the rear-view mirror).
For motorcycles, the toll sticker should be affixed to a part of the vehicle which cannot be removed or cannot be removed easily.
Please note: Short-term toll stickers (2-month and 10-day stickers) must be punched prior to being affixed. Toll stickers which are not punched or which are not affixed to the vehicle are invalid and one must expect penalties in the event of an inspection.
Toll stickers are valid for a specific vehicle and may not be transferred to other vehicles. As both annual toll stickers and short-term toll stickers (2-month and 10-day) contain security features, it is easy to see if they have been removed and reaffixed to a different vehicle. On stickers which have been removed, the word “ungültig” (invalid) appears on the left and right edges and parts indicating the validity period (year) and parts of the hologram are missing. Such stickers are not considered to be properly affixed and are thus invalid!
After the sticker has expired, please remove it: Lift up the corner of the sticker and pull off all of the layers together. Use a moist cloth and water only to remove any glue residues.
A maximum of two Austrian toll stickers may be attached to a vehicle at the same time.
Please retain the lower part of the toll sticker (counterfoil with the serial number) for two reasons:
a) for presentation at toll sites: The lower part of the annual toll sticker entitles you to purchase a discounted annual card for any special toll route: you can save up to EUR 40.00.
b) as proof of purchase: In the event that the windscreen must be replaced, the lower part of the sticker can be used to apply for reimbursement of the sticker costs.
